As this year’s Valentine’s Day is right in the middle of the week, why not make it a “love week” spanning the weekends before and after with a string of dates in Nyack. Here are 10 ideas how to celebrate your love:

1-That’s Amore – Enjoy a glorious bowl of handmade pasta at DPNB Pasta & Provisions and then head up the street to see Italian American Reconciliation at the charming Elmwood Playhouse. To impress your date even more: enroll in an Italian conversation and culture class at Salonniere.

2-Paint the Town – Get inspired at the Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center and the Perry Lawson Gallery next door. Then head up to Black Parakeetz to paint, sip and sing yourself. Body painters? Get matching tats at Vanguard Tattoo and then toast them with a Boxer donut – or something stronger at the Old Village Inne.

3-Treasure Hunters – There are so many great thrift stores, antique stores and other unique stores to discover GOLD! Go on the hunt together. Map/List>>>>

4-Global Travelers – Spin a globe and pick a cuisine. You’ll find all these international cuisines in our tiny village without having to book a plane ticket: Ukrainian, Tibetan, Dominican, Peruvian, Filipino, French, Vietnamese, Thai, Italian, Greek, Irish, Mexican, Japanese. Even Southern USA! Or book a tour with Joey G’s Food Tours to enjoy bites at many! To see the full restaurant list >>>

5-Jazz it Up – Swanky, dark bars at Hudson House, The Greekish and The Local get you in just the right mood to sway. Then head to Maureen’s Jazz Cellar or Casa del Sol for live music. All the music options coming up>>>

6-Your love is fire – Snap a cute pic of yourselves in front the historic main street fire house and grab a bite next door at La Dolce Vita. Anything bought at Genalisa Lingerie will help fan the flames.

7-Hike hand in hand – Grab picnic goodies at Scott & Joe and cute mittens at Long Path Outfitters.

8-Early risers – Love lives in the pancakes at Strawberry Place and the Breakfast and Burger Club. And loads of ooooh la la at Patisserie Didier Dumas.

9-Book Worms Unite – Grab a latte at the Art Café and the historic Andrew Carnegie-donated Nyack Library. Stroll over to the Carson McCullers House. And then browse Nyack’s three local book sellers: Pickwick, Big Red Books, and Main Street Beat.

10-Love & Games – A cozy living room to play board games, pour your own craft brews, and nibble delicious Vietnamese fare at Mekong District.

And if lots of dates go really well…hey…get a room at Hotel Nyack and/or get married or renew your vows in a beautiful setting & for a good cause with The Angel Nyack!

Rose Lighting and Vintage owners Richard and Claudia Rose are an inspiration to anyone who wants to take something they love to do and turn it into a thriving business. For most of his life, Richard, a retired architect, has collected vintage and antique cast iron, vintage lighting, lighting parts, and unusual found objects. His wife, Claudia, is a retired music teacher, has always been interested in fashion – collecting early 20th century vintage clothing, dresses, and costumes. Together, the two have spent many weekends and vacations in antique stores and flea markets looking for vintage pieces for Richard to create lights and Claudia to add to her clothing collection.

Yet, once the pandemic started, the Roses took their side projects to the next level. They continued to look for pieces to add to their respective collections and Richard began assembling lighting from the various elements he had found over the years in their apartment’s guest bedroom. Once he had created one hundred lights, Claudia and Richard decided it was time to sell the lights and clothing together so they rented a modest space at Mongers Market in Bridgeport, CT in 2020.

When asked what makes their business special, the answer is obvious – the items they sell are unique.

“I offer one-of-a-kind lighting made from found objects, vintage, and antique lighting parts as well as lighting made from glass and metal light shades that I restore and rewire with vintage and new parts,” Richard says. “My lighting restorations and creations are unique and my work appeals to people that want vintage lighting in their homes or businesses.”

Claudia’s response mirrors the same sentiment – “My business offers one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted, or sourced vintage and contemporary clothing with a unique or fun flare. I especially love reworked patchwork and crochet. My target customer is someone of any age who enjoys looking a little different from everyone else!”

In 2022, the Roses felt Nyack was the perfect place to set up their first real storefront.

“Nyack has the best shopping in the County,” the couple says. “We have been visiting Nyack for more than 30 years, starting when it was a center for antiques, and now with a growing community of vintage and second-hand clothing stores. It was the perfect location for our new shop.”

Looking forward, the Roses hope to further grow and establish their venture in the Nyack community and beyond.

Phoenix Festival: Live Arts in Nyack

In 2022, Nyack joined the roster of world-class arts events with  Phoenix Festival: Live Arts in Nyack, an annual celebration of classical theater, music, local culture, and the creative spirit of community. Over its five inaugural weekends in September and October 2022, the Festival presented both live and outdoor performances against the majestic vistas of the Hudson River and the lively, jazzy riverside village of Nyack. In 2023, the critically-acclaimed Festival expanded its programming to include four indoor and outdoor productions, partnerships with Children’s Shakespeare Company and Emotions Physical Theatre, and special events all over downtown Nyack. The Festival also offers a spotlight for local Nyack nonprofits, along with opportunities for students and volunteers to get up-close and hands-on with live performance. Stay tuned for more information on Phoenix Festival 2024!

The Festival is hosted and produced by the Phoenix Theatre Ensemble, an internationally recognized leader in creative contemporary theater and winner of multiple prestigious awards for excellence in theater arts. Founded in New York City in 2004, the Ensemble is proud to make Rockland County its second artistic home. PTE Artistic Director Elise Stone and PTE Executive Director Craig Smith serve as the Festival’s leadership, engaging local, county and New York State institutions, educational organizations, businesses and non-profits in support of the Festival.

Nyack’s Famous Street Fairs

Anyone who knows Nyack knows the street fairs – five each year in spring, summer, and fall – a Nyack tradition for well over three decades. Maybe even the most seasoned veterans of the village have lost track of the years, but the basic premise has remained the same: Crafts, jewelry, food, live music, clothing, gifts, art, antiques, specialty items — offered by hundreds of vendors and local merchants. Thousands of people come. Many come back – and stay.

Nyack Halloween Parade

Every year, the Village of Nyack and the Chamber of Commerce proudly present the most hair-raising Halloween celebration this side of the Hudson — ranked by Travel Channel as one of the Top 10 Halloween parades nationwide. Dancing ghouls, marching bands, wild costumes, fantastic floats, live entertainment, and more. Great prizes for the best floats and costumes.

Rockland Fashion Week (Photo Courtesy of Hope Wade)

Rockland Fashion Week

Produced by Nyack’s Hope Wade Designs, Rockland Fashion Week (RFW) tfocuses on Rockland as a growing hub for fashion design and manufacture, and includes local pop-up shops, as well as educational sessions on the “business of fashion” at local middle and high schools around the county. A mini fashion show (including one for dogs) leads up to the main event. RFW culminates in a gala runway event at Palisades Center in West Nyack featuring local fashion designers.

Nyack’s Weekly Farmers Market: Thursdays,  8am-2pm

Families love the Farmers Market, every Thursday year-round featuring live music, fresh goods from local farms and artisans, and plenty of kid-friendly activities.

In addition to the aforementioned events, Nyack makes it easy to combine events with shopping, dining, or recreation in a day trip or whatever a weekend itinerary might require. One draw for shoppers who like to marry a good deal with a good meal is the tempting array of casual eateries and fine dining establishments that put Nyack on the map as a haven for food enthusiasts.

“Nyack is a top destination for dining in the Hudson Valley,” said Mark Davidoff, Visit Nyack Board member, and director, Rockland Community College Culinary Arts and Hospitality Center. “Our village is a hub for both culinary arts education, and for the final product – the best food on the plate for the discerning diner.”

Local hotels offer package stays with discounts and specials at restaurants, shops and personal service establishments.  The river is Nyack’s jewel in the crown – majestic Hudson vistas from the shore, hikes at the river’s edge or Hook Mountain ridge, or fun on the river itself – sailing, kayaking and water sports as summer stretches into fall.

Here’s a quick drone’s-eye view:

Photo Courtesy of RCC Culinary Institute

Dining and food: Nyack offers 50+ restaurant options from pubs to world-class gourmet menus for those who like choice; themed food tours for those who like to explore; award-winning cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Institute for those who like to make their own; and a year-round Farmers Market every Thursday for those who want to connect with food, farms, friends and fun.

Shopping: Nyack is a hub for the unique, one-of-a kind, hard-to-find-anywhere-else purchase. Also, a place for buyers who are interested in sustainably sourced goods, original fashion, handmade items (which customers may help create) and, overall, a personal shopping experience – often delivered with a sense of humor, always with plenty of time to browse, discuss and decide.

Entertainment and the arts: Nyack’s bustling night-and-day life offers theater and music of all genres, classic plays, musicals, jazz, rock, blues, drumming, karaoke, open mic nights, salsa music and dancing, classical concerts and a cluster a music-related businesses offering music lessons, instruments, and recording capabilities. Nyack is also home to a thriving art community, hosting contemporary art shows, workshops, curated film screenings, poetry reading, art classes and camps for kids, pop-up art events and more.

Biking Nyack Beach State Park (Photo Credit: Caroline Scimone)

Recreation: Opportunities for hiking, biking, and river sports in Nyack are among the best in the Hudson Valley. Access to the Governor Mario M. Cuomo bridge path is within minutes of the village — with sweeping views of the river to the north and south. For those who want to get their toes wet, launch your kayak from Nyack Beach State Park or board sailing charters from Nyack marina. Hiking-wise, you can “find your long path” through guided hikes organized by Long Path Outfitters in collaboration with West Mountain Guide Co. and take in stunning river views and unlimited leaf-peeping opportunities. For those who want to ‘catch some air,’ there’s always the option for a quick spin at the riverside skateboarding park, recognized by ‘skaters’ as one of the best in the region.

Culture and history: Home to civil rights leaders, artists, writers, Nobel Prize winners, movie stars, and many far-from-ordinary hard-working people, Nyack has a deep multicultural history with fascinating stories to tell. Those stories are well told by the Historical Society, Nyack Library, Hopper House Museum and other organizations, offering tours, exhibitions and special programs – all accessible in town, online, or via phone.

Relaxation and personal services: With all the activity going on in Nyack, it’s still possible to relax in one of the village’s top-flight salons, spas or barber shops offering premium personal care services. See visitnyack.org for information.

Enjoy life. Enjoy Nyack.

The Greekish’s Dine-in or Take-out Thanksgiving Meal

Thanksgiving is all about gratitude — and, of course, the food. Nyack’s restaurants, bakeries and purveyors of specialty goods are ready to contribute. Following is a sampling of the options.

For those who would prefer not to cook, several Nyack restaurants are offering dining in, and some are providing both dine-in and take-out.

“We’re pleased to offer our patrons the option of dining with us, or ordering for pick-up,” said Constantine Kalandranis, owner, The Greekish. “Our menu includes traditional favorites with a Mediterranean flair, such as turkey brined in lemon and oregano, hummus, tzasiki, pita, and potatoes whipped with Greek yogurt and dill.”

Hudson House of Nyack is also offering both dine-in and take-out. In addition to the traditional bird, the menu includes roasted salmon, braised short rib, and quinoa stuffed squash (vegan) as alternatives, as well as a tempting selection of the restaurant’s signature desserts.

Hudson Market on Main Thanksgiving

Hudson Market on Main’s Take-out Thanksgiving Dinner for Four

Hudson Market on Main is serving full Thanksgiving feasts with all the trimmings for pick up. “Our take-out meal serves four, and includes roasted turkey breast, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, three sides, bread, butter and six cookies — all for $75,” said Mark Davidoff, Manager, Hudson Market on Main and Director of RCC’s Hospitality and Culinary Arts Center.

In the dessert category, the RCC’s Hospitality and Culinary Arts Center is offering a pop-up pie shop produced as part of the professional baking program. The shop’s array of traditional pies uses locally sourced ingredients such as Hudson Valley apples. Additional offerings include mini pumpkin bread loaves with maple crumble and spiced sugar cookies.

Farina Cafe

Farina Caffe’s Apple Pie

While amazing breakfast and lunch sandwiches are on the menu, Nyack newcomer Farina Caffe is an artisanal bakery truly meant for people who like to eat dessert first. For Thanksgiving, there will be pies, as well as whole flan, red velvet cake and carrot cake, plus the shop’s dizzying array of lovingly crafted baked goods.

Nyack’s weekly Nyack Farmers Market is another valuable Thanksgiving resource, bringing a bountiful harvest of fresh local produce and specialty goods to holiday tables. For last-minute needs, the Market will be open on Wednesday, November 24 — the day before Thanksgiving.

“For many families, Thanksgiving 2021 will have special meaning,” said Davidoff. “Many will be together again after more than a year of isolation. Many have experienced illness, and in some cases, loss. Coming together around the Thanksgiving table to enjoy a special meal will be welcome comfort and relief.”

Dine-in reservations and advance orders for take out meals and desserts are recommended for all Nyack establishments. Patrons should also note that COVID protocols remain in effect in Nyack.

Move over, Macy’s…winter magic lights the streets and storefronts of Nyack for all to enjoy! And what better way to add to the festivities than with a contest?
In November, Nyack Merchants United challenged local businesses to compete for honors – and prizes – for the best storefront displays, inviting decoration aficionados to vote for their favorites on a Facebook page dedicated to the Winter Wanderland Window Decorating Contest. Feel free to scroll through all the fun and festive entries!

The results are now in… and the winners are:
First Place Winner: Knitting Nation, 30 North Broadway
Jane Saffir (owner)
Runner-up: Hope Wade Designs/Honor & Blume Co-Op, 23 North Broadway
Mayor Don Hammond with Hope Wade (owner) and Hilarie Blumenthal (owner)

The contest was great fun – and a great way to support local shops. The winners get valuable prizes to help sustain them, including free advertising, promotional photography and membership in the Nyack Chamber of Commerce.

All are invited to view the winning storefronts, as well as the many boutiques, restaurants and service establishments offering seasonal delights in a welcoming – and safe – Winter Wanderland.
Continuing every weekend through February 28, Nyack’s Winter Wanderland includes sidewalk shopping, hearty food and hot drinks, festive decorations, the warmth of fire pits, and the joy of beautiful music – all with a backdrop of breathtaking views and access to the Hudson River.
Winter Wanderland is a continuation of Nyack’s Safe Haven activities that began last spring with street closures for outdoor shopping and dining.  All are invited to wander!
Masks and social distancing are required.

Move over grown-ups!  There are new, highly motivated makers in town…and they’re kids! Kids who are changing the retail world with their enthusiasm, fresh ideas and new products — just in time for buyers to find unique goods and gifts for the holiday season.

An impressive group of these enterprising businesses will be showing off their talent, promoting their creations and introducing themselves to prospective buyers at a special pop-up shop featuring young entrepreneurs, set for this Sunday in Nyack.

Hosted by Maria Luisa Boutique, the shop will open at 12:00 noon on Sunday, December 13 and run until 4:00 pm at 75 South Broadway. Everyone is invited to bring their holiday shopping lists, browse the exhibits and sample what the kids are offering.

The shop is just one of Nyack’s Safe Haven events, now inviting visitors to explore a Winter Wanderland of festive shopping, dining, live music and other delights in this beautiful river-side village. As always in Nyack’s Safe Haven, patrons must wear masks and practice social distancing.
“Part of our Winter Wanderland, the Young Entrepreneurs pop-up shop is a platform for our kids who, despite the pandemic, are reinventing our world and making it a better place,” said Maria Luisa Whittingham, owner of Maria Luisa boutique.

“For some kids, fun isn’t always about video games, online movies and social media,” added Whittingham. “Fun is creating new things, changing the way things are made, and working on improving the way we manufacture, market and enjoy the goods that enrich our lives.”
Here’s a sampling of the young entrepreneurs who will be showcased at the pop-up event:
Maker Gigi. Owner: Gigi Marchese, 9 years old. “I hand-sew animals and monsters out of felt,” says Gigi. “I try to make things I know my friends will like. I was inspired to start creating these special toys because of some makers I saw at a Maker Faire last year. I hope I can inspire some people, too, just like they did for me. When you make something with your own hands, it can make you feel happy. And you can make others feel happy by sharing those creations.” Visit Gigi on Instagram at Maker Gigi.
