Hudson Spectacles owner, Carl Cameau, has quite literally had his eyes on the prize for a while. While he was in school for real estate and property development in Pennsylvania, he worked as an optical lab technician on the side. At the time, he was intrigued by the eyecare business, but assumed he couldn’t have a future in it because he wasn’t a doctor.

This all changed once Cameau finished his degree, moved back to New York, and made his home in Nyack. He quickly took advantage of the opportunity to become a licensed optician – he did his apprenticeship with Eyevolution, the optical shop at 42 South Franklin Street which has since become the home of Hudson Spectacles – and at that point was introduced to the art and design side of eyewear, fitting, and fashion.

Once he earned his certification, Cameau went on to work for New York City’s Mykita as their Principal Optician and Lab Manager where he gained invaluable professional experience in opening and managing optical retail stores, but was starting to feel like it was time to put that knowledge to use in his own community.

“I rode the train for years – dreaming, writing, and conceptualizing what I would envision our store doing,” Cameau says, “I also wanted a place to explore the range of what I could offer as an optician. The selection of eyewear around the world is endless and I wanted to bring the collection I appreciate most to our area.”

Once Cameau made the decision to set up shop in Nyack, he never looked back. He returned to Eyevolution and eventually took over in 2020, when Hudson Spectacles was officially born. The store offers full primary eyecare and a fantastic collection of handpicked curated indie eyewear from around the world. It is a Zeiss-certified practice, meaning the quality and performance of the optics is second to none. The target customer is anyone who wears glasses, and even those who do not. The shop carries an incredible selection of non-prescription sunglasses, sports eyewear and even diving masks/goggles that can be prescription if requested.

“Our selection of eyewear and one-on-one shopping and fitting appointments are a key part of our shop,” Cameau explains. “We take the time to get to know the person behind the frame. What type of work, lifestyle, and personality they have. The shape of the customer’s face, eye color, hair, and skin all go into choosing a pair of eyeglasses that not only look amazing, but also make the customer feel confident while wearing them. I love when someone can wear something effortlessly, even when it is slightly outside the box.”

In addition to maximizing customers’ optical experiences, Cameau is in the process of opening The Parker: Framing, Arts & Gallery at 40 South Franklin St (Right next door to Hudson Spectacles in the former home of The Corner Frame Shop).

“We plan to do art framing, artist receptions, gallery events, film previews, and more,” Cameau explains, “I am really excited to continue this space in the memory of one of our great friends and local business owners, Hal Parker. Hal was everyone’s framer. He did his work in Nyack for 50 years, and passed away in January. His business was a true staple in the lower Hudson Valley, and it is an honor to continue his legacy by reopening his space for the arts community. We just finished refreshing the entire space and received all new equipment.”

Owning a business in Nyack has allowed Cameau the opportunity to give back to his community in a multitude of ways with this much needed service – one of the goals he had in opening his small business here. Cameau has partnered with the Rockland County Pride Center, The Center for Safety and Change, and the Nyack Center, to start a “Vision Scholarship” program that provides eye exams and glasses to community members in need. He has also donated over 200 eyeglass frames to survivors of the 2021 Evergreen Court Adult Home fire in Spring Valley. Last year, Cameau was the proud recipient of the Empire Award for Community Service, an honor given by the New York State Senate to businesses that contribute in meaningful ways to a community’s quality of life.

When asked about future plans for the shop, Cameau stated that he “sees Hudson Spectacles as a growing community partner that will continue to work with independent artists and designers to bring a high level of eyewear to communities outside of the greater NYC area.”

Nyack’s downtown has nearly everything anyone could possibly want, but for the past 40 years there’s been one thing missing from the village’s business lineup: a supermarket. The grand opening of Nyack Fresh Market in late February saw that need fulfilled and a dream made real by longtime Rockland County entrepreneur Wilson Bermeo.

Bermeo, who immigrated to the U.S. from Ecuador in 1995, started out in the food business by selling produce out of his minivan. “I would go house to house throughout Spring Valley, day-in and day-out, trying to get regular customers,” Bermeo recounts.

“After two years, the business had grown so much that I was able to purchase a truck, and then, eventually, my first supermarket in Spring Valley,” Bermeo added. “I named it Huerto del Eden, which translates to ‘Garden of Eden.’”

Building on that success, Bermeo’s American dream has expanded to include three more food businesses – a produce distribution company called D&K Produce, Spring Valley Supermarket and Pomona’s Mount Ivy Diner. Bermeo set his sights on Nyack prior to the pandemic because he has always loved the village and, especially, the diversity of the community.

Ongoing feedback from customers is key to Bermeo’s business strategy.

“As with all of my other businesses, my goal is to bring products to the community that reflect the desires of its people,” Bermeo said. “Nyack is very diverse, so we offer a variety of items from different cultures. We’re always encouraging our customers to tell us what they’d like to see so we can be sure to get it for them. We want to make sure everybody knows that they’re welcome here.”

Given Bermeo’s Ecuadorian heritage, the store carries a healthy helping of Latin American staples such as Tropicala’s queso blanco, La Ricura pupusas de chicharron and crema de Honduras. In addition to Latin American specialties, longtime Nyack residents and recent city transplants alike can appreciate the Junior’s cheesecake and Urban Meadow coconut custard pies that Bermeo supplies.

Customers interested in special deals can check the store’s weekly circular and follow the store on their
Facebook page for the most up-to-date promotions, which currently include a summer raffle event. For every $20 spent at the store, Nyack Fresh Market will give customers one free ticket toward the chance to win a 2023 Toyota Corolla SE. The winner will be announced on August 6th at 9:00 pm.

Since opening at the end of February, Bermeo has made it a priority to ensure that his customers are happy and sure to return. In addition to carefully curating his product, he’s reached out to the village to explore ways to enhance parking options near the store. As a result, the Nyack Parking Authority has adopted – on a trial basis – a policy of “one hour free parking” in the RiverSpace/Main parking lot adjacent to the Fresh Market.

The one hour free parking policy applies for one visit per day per vehicle. Shoppers using this option don’t need to visit a Munimeter or use the ParkMobile app, unless they want to extend their parking session or return to the lot later in the day during the hours of enforcement (10:00am, to 7:00pm, Monday-Saturday).

“The one-hour free option is in addition to the existing long-term metered parking available in the RiverSpace lot,” said Nyack Mayor, Don Hammond. “The intent of the new policy is to facilitate convenient access to nearby shops and, of course, the Fresh Market.”

“It’s an experiment,” added Hammond. “”The Village Board will be reviewing the change over the summer.”

Meantime, Bermeo encourages customers to download the ParkMobile app to their phones as a convenient way to cover parking as needed. (A one-hour stay costs $1.05.) He also reminds customers that parking in Nyack is free before 10:00am and after 7:00pm Monday-Saturday, and free all day on Sunday. What’s more, Bermeo has a dozen “customer-only” free spaces on the south side of his building.

Courtesy of Nyack Fresh Market / Wilson Bermeo

“We’re excited to welcome the Fresh Market to Nyack, and we’re happy to provide support,” said Hammond.

“Having a grocery store will bring more business to town and benefit the many families who live in both the village’s longstanding residences and newly constructed apartments,” added Roger Cohen, President, Nyack Chamber of Commerce. “The store helps make Nyack more self-sufficient. What’s more, the synergy between the Fresh Market and the Nyack Farmers Market, which is held in the lot next door every Thursday, is a big plus.”

When Bermeo was asked what he was most excited about, it was the simple fact that he was finally able to open and provide this much needed service to the Nyack community – despite the many fits and starts created by the pandemic. “If you work hard, all of your dreams can come true.”

Long Path Outfitters owner Laura Kreeger Neil has spent a lifetime in love with outdoor adventures. Inspired by her father’s business, Kreeger & Sons, a chain of camping and outdoor stores operated throughout the tri-state area in the 1970s and 80s, Laura spent a childhood climbing in and out of tents in the woods and on the store floor.

“Hiking and travel have always been a huge part of my life,” Neil said. “While I grew up in New York, I spent time living in St. Louis, Chicago, Denver, New Zealand, and Tanzania.”

Despite the perfect pedigree to be the proprietor of Rockland’s only true hiking shop, Neil’s past life included working in communications and fundraising at a fair housing organization, and then at a farm and education center. She has a background in social work and community development and even had a stint as an aspiring paleontologist. Yet, none of it felt like what she really wanted to be doing.

“I thought about opening a shop like this for years,” Neil recounts. “In the fall of 2020, after years of hikes throughout the Hudson Valley (and countless more during the pandemic with my family), I decided it was time to finally realize my dream and in September 2021, we opened our doors.”

Long Path focuses on carrying the best gear, apparel, and accessories to help people “find their own long path,” which also happens to be the slogan for the store. Neil has personally used and loved most of the brands she sells, many of which are from small companies that you can’t find anywhere nearby. And yes, while many people prefer to order online, having a hiking-focused brick-and-mortar shop like this allows people to really get the right fit for their gear, something Neil believes is essential to the practice of hiking.

When asked why she chose Nyack for her business location, Neil, who moved to town in 2007, said that one of the main reasons her family moved here was because the town was basically surrounded by state parks. The Long Path, a 350-mile trail created and maintained by the New York/New Jersey Trail Conference, runs right through Nyack to Hook Mountain and Rockland Lake (and beyond).

“A short walk or drive gets you to hundreds of miles of trails,” Neil stated. “Nyack has always felt like a little mountain town so it was time to help more people get outside. We moved here with a toddler son and now we have three sons and they have been running up the Hook since they could walk.”

Neil’s target customer is anyone who enjoys the outdoors in any weather. The store sells shoes and apparel for all ages, along with maps, guidebooks, and trail snacks. Staff can help get anyone ready for a day hike on The Hook or an adventure overseas with hats, socks, backpacks, layers, binoculars, sunglasses. Beginning in May, the store will sponsor guided local hikes the last Saturday of every month with West Mountain Guide Co. along with more sunset hike opportunities throughout the spring and summer months.

Future goals? Neil plans to expand the business’s inventory of creative and small hiking brands, and ultimately hopes to “grow Rockland County’s reputation as the incredible hiking destination it is.”

CBS News reporter John Elliott has recently earned quite a few stamps in his Nyack visitor passport!

A popular host on the CBS Shop Local Saturday program, Elliott celebrated Black History month on the show with interviews featuring members of Nyack’s vibrant community of Black-owned businesses – including Black Parakeetz: Paint, Swig and Sing! on Main Street, as well as Teagevity and Rebecca’s Paradise, regulars at the weekly Nyack Farmers Market.

Links to the video interviews are available here:

While filming at Black Parakeetz, owners Terry and Naomi Clarke took Elliott on a tour of their establishment, which boasts an art lounge for painting experiences (no prior experience needed), a karaoke lounge (also no prior experience needed), and a bar/kitchen offering a menu of specialty foods and art-and-music-themed cocktails hand crafted by Terry.

As Terry and Naomi describe it, Black Parakeetz is an experience-based venue for curated gatherings of every kind – birthday celebrations, pre-wedding parties, holiday get-togethers, music and theater events and corporate meetings, to name just a few possibilities. Terry cites a recent art-themed team-building workshop as an example.

Black Parakeetz is not your ordinary “party place,” so Naomi encourages everyone to stop by the business at 298 Main Street, and visit the Parakeetz website, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Facebook pages. “We’re everywhere and we’re here!”

As part of his Nyack tour, Elliott also interviewed Preston Powell, owner of an artisanal boutique tea company – Teagevity – at the Nyack Farmers Market.

Powell, who happens to be the grandson of Abyssinian Baptist Church Pastor and politician Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., credits his time sipping “comfort drinks” like coffee and tea in church as the original driving force behind his love for tea. He also says the idea to start his business came to the fore when one of his martial arts students suggested he sell the tea that he was serving after class.

Powell carefully sources his teas from organic growers, offering a wide range of special blends created to promote health and longevity. ”I tell people ‘don’t buy tea from strangers,’” Powell said. According to Powell, his customers are neighbors, friends, family. “That’s what I love about the Nyack Farmers Market…it’s all about community.”

Elliott also had a conversation with Annie Rebecca Roberts of Rebecca’s Paradise, another shop at the Nyack Farmers Market. Roberts creates organic, plant-based skincare products.

Sharing a thread with Powell’s story, Roberts’ experiences growing up in an ecofriendly family environment shaped her business concept and mission. Her grandmother was a skincare professional in Jamaica.

“It’s very important to know what you’re ingesting or applying to the skin,” said Roberts.

With Rebecca’s Paradise skincare products, customers can be confident that they’re caring for their skin naturally, and don’t have to worry about harmful toxins, which are not uncommon in commercially produced lotions and soaps.

“Customers support me because they like what I do, and they like that the products are clean beauty.”

You can view the full interviews with the Clarkes, Powell and Roberts below. For more information about the Nyack Farmers Market, click here.

Also featured earlier in the year on the CBS Shop Local program include Nyack’s Pickwick Book Shop and the Hickory Dickory Dock boutique, a purveyor German handicrafts, clocks and decorative goods sourced from Europe.

Nyack’s thriving small business community is something we here at Visit Nyack certainly think is newsworthy, but it’s always great to hear when others outside of our bubble feel the same!

Maya Sargent and Viviana Villalva, graduate students in Fordham University’s Public Media and Journalism master’s program, took a little jaunt to the west side AKA the best side of the river to talk to members of Nyack’s small business community. They spent a day exploring the village and speaking with two long-standing Nyack business owners, John Dunnigan of Pickwick Bookshop and Maria Luisa Whittingham of Maria Luisa Boutique about what makes Nyack such a great place to set up shop.

It was just a few weeks ago that Phoenix Festival: Live Arts in Nyack delivered its final performance in its first annual five-week celebration of arts and culture in our beautiful Hudson River village. The Festival was hosted and produced by the Phoenix Theatre Ensemble (PTE), an internationally recognized leader in the world of contemporary theater and winner of multiple awards for excellence in theater arts.

The vision of PTE was to create a celebration of theater, arts and community culture rivaling that of national arts festivals – with Nyack providing the stage for it all. Despite having to become amateur meteorologists at times (outdoor theatre during hurricane season is no small undertaking!), the organizers of the event were able to do just that.

Running from mid-September to mid-October, the festival took place during the Hudson Valley region’s beautiful fall season and featured over a dozen live, outdoor performance programs in both downtown Nyack’s Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center and at Upper Nyack’s Marydell Faith & Life Center at the foot of majestic Hook Mountain.

Productions included three iconic plays revisited by PTE in the context of our current world: Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth and Anton Chekov’s The Harmfulness of Tobacco. There were also performances by, Rockland’s Children’s Shakespeare Theatre, tributes to Nyack resident Helen Hayes, walking tours of Nyack village and more.

“A big bonus for Festival goers was Nyack village itself,” said Craig Smith, Phoenix Festival Executive Director. “Nyack was the perfect anchor for this unique festival that blended classic theater and local history with breathtaking natural beauty in a jazzy, upbeat river town setting,”

Community arts organizations like Arts Rock, Rivertown Film, Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center, Rockland Poets, Nyack Library, and the Historical Society of Rockland also created and hosted a variety of events throughout the month for people looking to keep the magic going between shows.

The Festival invested over $200,000 in the local economy. More than 80% of production dollars went to local businesses, e.g., sound engineering, scenery and set building, bus and limo services, housing, and catering.

Community support exceeded expectations. Over 30 local businesses contributed more than $30,000 in direct funding and raffle prizes valued at over $3,500, including dining, merchandise, and hotel stays for theatre-goers. In addition to local funding and support from national institutions, Rockland County Office of Economic Development and Tourism was a major contributor

“Tourism is important for Rockland,” said Smith. “The Festival attracted a broad audience – nearly 60% came from outside of local communities – New York City and boroughs, plus Westchester, Long Island and New Jersey.”

Now that a successful first run at an arts festival has concluded, the ensemble is looking forward to returning to town in 2023.

“Taking a step into a completely new endeavor takes faith,” Smith stated. “This magic could never have been possible without generous contributions and unflagging support from the Rockland community. Building on the faith placed in us this year, we’re looking forward to an even more successful Festival in 2023, and to many years of collaboration that will bring continuing joy, growth and prosperity to our special community.”

Nyack’s Halloween Night: Ghoulishly good trick-or-treating fun
Oct 31

Upper Nyack ― North of Main Street on Broadway ―is hands-down the craziest trick-or-treat destination in the tri-state area where the actual night of Halloween is celebrated regardless of the day of the week or the weather. Streets are closed to traffic, home owners go all out on decorating their spooky abodes, and literally thousands of pounds of candy are distributed to kids of all ages in costumes worthy of the most creative fantasy runways in Tinseltown. Adding icing to the poison apple, the South Nyack Firehouse on North Broadway hosts its annual haunted house, a beloved tradition for those who dare make the visit. Festivities start at about 3:00 pm and go to the witching hour.
