The Historical Society of the Nyacks’ Fall exhibition features the photographs of the construction of the original Tappan Zee Bridge taken between 1952 – 1955 by Leonard Cooke of Nyack. Mr. Cooke took frequent progress photographs from his boat and from other vantage points, and he selected a set from a large number of views on which he provided his comments that tell the step-by-step story of the construction of the bridge.

Read more about Leonard Cooke and the discovery of these “lost” photos in this Journal News article: http://www.lohud.com/story/news/local/rockland/tappan-zee/2015/09/10/tappan-zee-see-lost-photos-original-build/71957742/

A companion exhibit in the Carnegie-Farian room of the Nyack Library (Broadway entrance) is titled “Building the Tappan Zee Bridge.”

The Leonard Cooke photographic exhibit is open Sundays 1pm to 4pm, from September 13 through November 29, 2015.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. Donations are encouraged.

The Historical Society of the Nyacks’ Museum is located in the Depew House across the street from Memorial Park, at 50 Piermont Avenue, Nyack NY 10960. Enter under the front porch. Metered Parking is available in the Nyack Library parking lot off Hudson Street, and there is also free and metered street parking nearby.

Last Friday the I Lift NY Super Crane began active duty on the Tappan Zee Bridge replacement. The 3-1/2 hour operation was condensed into this great video, which we’re pleased to share here.

Nyack’s Memorial Park on the Hudson has a wonderful view of the crane and the bridge, viewable now. Our new viewing platform is scheduled to open in June — stay tuned for opening celebration announcements.

Get an up-close-and-personal look at the construction project via our friends at Nyack News & Views.

High atop the Tappan Zee Bridge is a nest box that is home to a pair of peregrine falcons. These birds of prey mate for life. Nesting season is February through August, and we hope to see some new chicks in the spring. You can watch it all unfold in real time thanks to a live “Falcon Cam.”

The male falcon arrived at the nest on Tuesday, and we’re anxiously awaiting the arrival of his mate. Perhaps a Valentine’s Day reunion is in the works? UPDATED 2/27/15: Two falcons are now in the nest.

The huge I Lift NY crane is now in position on the north side of the Tappan Zee Bridge, ready to begin the really heavy lifting as The New NY Bridge takes shape. The crane started its journey near San Francisco in December 2013. 6,000 miles later the crane arrived at its Hudson River destination on October 6, 2014. The final leg of the journey required a full moon and low tide. View the crane’s passage under the Tappan Zee Bridge in this video:
